Background of the study
This study examines how professional standards influence Hausa language interpreting services in legal settings. In courtrooms and legal proceedings where Hausa is widely spoken, accurate interpretation is critical for ensuring fair trials and just legal outcomes. Professional standards, which include rigorous training, certification, and adherence to ethical guidelines, aim to ensure that interpreters deliver precise and unbiased interpretations (Bello, 2023). This study investigates how the implementation of these standards affects interpreter performance in legal contexts in Kano and other Hausa-speaking regions. Through observations, interviews with legal interpreters, and surveys of legal professionals, the study assesses the quality of interpretation services and identifies gaps between prescribed standards and actual practice. The research also considers the role of continuing education and institutional support in maintaining high levels of interpreting accuracy. Ultimately, the study seeks to provide recommendations to enhance interpreter performance and to promote consistent application of professional standards in legal settings.

Statement of the problem
Despite established professional standards, inconsistencies in Hausa language interpreting services in legal settings persist, leading to errors that may compromise judicial outcomes (Bello, 2023). Inadequate adherence to training protocols, limited practical experience, and a lack of continuous professional development contribute to misinterpretations and legal miscommunications. These issues undermine the reliability of legal proceedings and affect public trust in the judicial process. This study aims to identify the specific challenges faced by interpreters and to evaluate how the enforcement of professional standards can be improved to ensure greater consistency and accuracy in legal interpretation.

Objectives of the study:

To assess the impact of professional standards on interpreter performance in legal settings.

To identify challenges that hinder compliance with these standards.

To recommend strategies for improving training and enforcement.

Research questions:

How do professional standards affect interpreter accuracy in legal proceedings?

What are the main challenges in meeting these standards?

What improvements can be made to enhance interpreter training and support?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it investigates the role of professional standards in ensuring high-quality Hausa legal interpretation. Enhanced interpreting services contribute to fair legal outcomes and reinforce public confidence in the judicial system, benefiting legal professionals and society at large (Bello, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating interpreter performance in Hausa legal settings, focusing on selected courts and interpreter interviews.

Definitions of terms:

Professional standards: Criteria and guidelines that govern interpreter training and performance.

Legal settings: Formal judicial and courtroom environments.

Interpreting services: The practice of converting spoken language in real time.
